When Creating a Character, don't worry about the dice roll. Your stats will be reset.
The Beginning
When you start off in the game, you start off in Tutorial Island. Here they teach you the basics, how to attack, jump, collect items, and complete quests. Just click everyone with a bubble on their head, and complete the quests by reading what you need to do, then turning in the quest.
If you plan on being a magician, leave tutorial island by talking to shanks at level 8, if you plan on being any other job, leave through shanks at level 10.
Classes
There are 5 jobs in maplestory,
Magician , Thief, Warrior , Archer , Pirate.
You can advance to any of these jobs at level 10, and again at level 30 you get another set of choices. Most people have these level 30 classes in mind when making a character.
Magicians can become Clerics, Ice/Lighting mages, or Fire/Poison mages.
Thieves can become Assassins(use throwing stars) or Bandits(use daggers)
Warriors can become Spearmen, Fighter, Or Page (Don't choose page unless you WANT to be underpowered/not very useful. It's a unique class, and some may have fun, but very very very weak.(weakest class))
Archers can become Hunters (Use bows) or Crossbowman (use crossbows)
Pirates can become Brawler (use knuckles) or Gunslinger (use guns and bullets)
Skills and Stats
Each class is unique, and has it's own skills that you can use. Speaking of skills, when you press K after your first job advance you can put points into skills every level.
There are also hotkeys. Use the keyboard button to assign items and skills to hot keys so that they are easier to use.
There are also stats. There are 4 stats that one can utilitze. Str, Dex, Luk, and Int. Each job/class uses different stats for different purposes.
Every class has a Main Stat, and that Main Stat determines how much damage they do with their attacks and skills.
Every class also has a Side Stat, which can slightly increase the damage done with their attacks and skills, but also increases your accuracy (needed to hit monsters at higher levels), and allows you to equip most items.
Main l Side
Warriors Str Dex
Magicians Int Luk
Archers Dex Str
Theives Luk Dex
Pirates (Gunslinger) Dex Str
Pirates (Brawler) Str Dex
There are also special ways to play each class, called Side Stat-Less. Which is basically a way of saying, you don't put ANY points into your side stat, because you want to do as much damage as possible. BUT THEN HOW WILL YOU EQUIP ITEMS / HIT MONSTERS!?!?!?!
Well, some classes Main Stat also increases their accuracy. For example, bowman, theives, gunslingers, and magicians all increase their accuracy with their main stat.
There are also many special items in the game that don't require you to have any of your side stat in order to equip them.
The main weapon that is utilized are the MAPLE WEAPONS
There are 3 different ones for each class. There is a level 35, 43, and 64 maple weapon for each class. The 35 and 43 drop from certain monsters, and the 64 you have to upgrade a 43 through @moneybags. This enables them to do a lot more damage than otherwise possible.
The way you go Side - Statless with a Warrior or a Brawler is the hardest. Their equips don't require you to have dexterity, however their main stat doesn't have any accuracy provided, so you have to use equips to increase your accuracy. This is not recommended for beginners at all.
BONUS

Party Quests: Quests you can do over and over again with a group of people. These are fun, but have tricks to them that you'll need more expierence people to explain.(i know how, but that could be it's own guide and then some)
The only other thing to remember, is to try to be nice, and have fun.
There is also training, which will be it's own guide coming soontm
