Just got back to school after 3 hour drive... so much traffic, but at least it's a good opportunity to listen to some classic albums. Here's a small sample of what I was listening to today:
UFO - Lights Out. Fantastic album with a great balance between a strong rhythm section and great, catchy melodies. Not to mention the marvelous songwriting that pervades the album throughout. "Just Another Suicide" is one of my favorite tracks on the album, boasting a killer solo from one of my favorite guitarist ever, Michael Schenker. He was my age when he played with UFO...
Iron Maiden - Killers. I thought I'd listen to this album today because it's March 15--the Ides of March!
Demetori - Il Mondo Dove e Finito il Tempo. These guys are a Japanese power metal band who exclusively seem to cover video game music. Their discography so far seems to mainly be comprised of Touhou covers. This particular song is what you get when you combine Touhou and Judas Priest (they borrowed the "Painkiller" riff for this one).
Genesis - Genesis. Unlike most of the music I love, Genesis doesn't really feature a world-class guitarist. But they don't have to; the songwriting stands on its own.

^Rainbow drooling. Never though I'd seen anyone else that had any remote similarities of music that I do lmao. Other than Kalyb to an extent. Continuing on the Genesis route for now.

I mean, I used to like prog and stuff. But idk, I kinda find it musically pretentious now.

I think that's a common criticism of prog rock as a whole. But while a lot of prog rock compositions are grandiose in nature, I don't think that it detracts from the enjoyment to be had.
There IS a lot of substance there to be appreciated, and I personally never got the feeling that guys such as Pink Floyd, Yes, King Crimson et al., were trying to come across as snobbish or greater than they really are. That's the definition of "pretentious" though, right?
However, that being said, a lot of progressive rock is a little too complex for my palate--I'd take Savatage over Dream Theater, or Deep Purple over Yes ANY DAY. It's one of those genres which I can appreciate and respect, despite it not being my favorite cup of tea.

In continuing with the prog theme... if only tangentially 21st Century Schizoid Man sample. So yeah.
