That's a newer one  but anyone who listens to Scorpions is a friend of mine! <3 I think their newer stuff (post Crazy World) still boasts some neat and effective songwriting, but it seems to me that they've restrained themselves... a bit too much. Bass lines and drumming gradually became dumbed down, and Matthias Jabs never really rips the way he used to. For instance, check out "No One Like You" and then listen to their latest single. I much prefer the Matthias of the 1980s! But even so, I'll take their 70s stuff over ANYTHING else they did, by a longshot. By virtue of their studio output with Uli Jon Roth alone, they're one of my favorite bands. Unfortunately, not many people outside of guitarists' circles are really familiar with Uli-era Scorps. But good God, the classic series of albums starting with Fly to the Rainbow and culminating with Taken by Force sure left us a high watermark for how great hard rock could truly be. |
